About Krutika Kuppalli:

Originally from Palo Alto, California, Dr. Kuppalli holds dual bachelor's degrees in biochemistry and international relations from the University of California San Diego. She received her medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and completed internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship training at Emory University in Atlanta, and a postdoctoral fellowship in global public health at UC San Diego. She also was an Emerging Leader in Biosecurity Fellow at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

In August 2021, Dr. Kuppalli joined the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, as a medical officer for the COVID-19 pandemic response, where she was an integral part of the global Incident Management Support Team (IMST). She contributed to the development of educational resources, supported the clinical characterization and management working group for COVID-19, and played a key role in creating the COVID-19 clinical management and therapeutics guidelines. She also served as the technical focal point for the Post COVID-19 Condition (PCC) Steering Committee, where she led the development of the case definition for PCC in children and adolescents. Additionally, she was a member of the secretariat for the Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) and participated in the WHO Steering Committee responsible for developing the Ebola Virus Disease Therapeutics Guidelines.

She was a core member of the WHO IMST for mpox from the onset of the multicountry outbreak in May 2022 until April 2024, and played a key role in developing educational resources and technical documents, including normative guidance for surveillance, public health, and diagnostics. She also was part of the writing team for the clinical management and infection prevention and control guidelines. During the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), she contributed to the proceedings of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee and assisted in drafting temporary recommendations issued by the Director General, providing clinical input, supporting missions to Nigeria and the Central African Republic, and helping launch the global mpox partnership which aimed to identify knowledge gaps and foster collaboration among stakeholders.

Dr. Kuppalli is recognized as a scientific expert in emerging pathogens, global health, biosecurity and outbreak response. She has advised governments at the local, national, and global level and held several leadership roles. She is the past chair of the Infectious Diseases Society of America’s (IDSA) Global Health Committee and served as part of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) Trainee Committee.

Talk Title: Physician 3.0: Practicing Medicine in the AI Era

When: Thursday May 14, noon to 1 p.m.

Dr. Rashmee Shah is a cardiologist who builds. She writes code, ships health products, and works at the intersection of clinical medicine and engineering. In 2021, she left a tenured academic track at the University of Utah to join Meta as a Clinical Research Scientist on their first health technology team. There, she partners with engineers to develop regulated AI software for cardiovascular health, including scalable data collection and labeling pipelines for model research and development.

Before Meta, she ran an NIH-funded research lab focused on clinical informatics, building NLP tools to extract structured phenotypes from electronic medical records. She has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers in JAMA, JACC, and Circulation, co-chaired an NHLBI workshop on AI in hypertension, and served as an invited expert at the JAMA AI Summit.

Dr. Shah sees patients at the Maliheh Clinic in Salt Lake City, a clinic for uninsured residents, and holds an adjunct appointment at the University of Utah. Her work sits in the gap between what physicians need and what engineers can build. She believes physicians should not wait for someone else to close that gap.

About Glynnis Garry Bann:

Dr. Bann holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and earned her medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Tennessee, where she graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. She received molecular biology training at UT Southwestern in the laboratory of Eric Olson, Ph.D., after being awarded the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research fellowship. She then completed internal medicine residency training, postdoctoral research fellowship training, and clinical cardiology fellowship training through the Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) at UT Southwestern and Parkland Health.

Dr. Bann joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024.

As a physician-scientist, Dr. Bann’s research interests include new therapies for heart failure and myocardial infarction. Her NIH-funded laboratory focuses on the transcriptional and epigenetic control of heart development and cardiac cell fate differentiation, with a concentration on direct fibroblast-to-cardiomyocyte reprogramming.

About Helen Hobbs:

An internationally recognized physician-scientist whose work has changed our understanding of cholesterol, heart disease, and fatty liver disease, Dr. Hobbs studies how differences in our genes affect the way the body processes fats, and her discoveries have helped explain why some people develop high cholesterol or liver disease while others do not. One of her major achievements was establishing the Dallas Heart Study, a landmark, multiethnic, population-based cohort that enabled groundbreaking discoveries, most notably the identification of variations in the PCSK9 gene that naturally keep cholesterol low and protect against heart disease, and the discovery of genetic changes that contribute to fatty liver disease. In addition, her work led to the identification of PNPLA3 variants as one of the most important genetic risk factors for fatty liver disease. Through this work, she has identified new biological pathways and potential targets for treatment, shaping how doctors think about preventing and treating heart and liver conditions.

Over her career, Dr. Hobbs has been honored with many of the highest awards in medicine and science, reflecting the global impact of her research. She has received major prizes from organizations around the world, including top honors from the American Heart Association, the European Atherosclerosis Society, and the prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. Universities such as Johns Hopkins, Mount Sinai, and Case Western Reserve have awarded her honorary degrees in recognition of her achievements. She has also been elected to elite scientific groups, including the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. An Investigator in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Dr. Hobbs is frequently invited to give high‑profile lectures across the globe, underscoring her reputation as one of the leading voices in genetic and medical research.

About Dr. Timothy R. Rebbeck:

Professor Rebbeck joined the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard TH Chan School in 2015 as the Vincent L. Gregory, Jr. Professor of Cancer Prevention. Professor Rebbeck serves as the director for the Zhu Family Center for Global Cancer Prevention Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and the Center for Global Health at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He directs large, multicenter studies and international consortia that have identified genetic, molecular, and epidemiological factors associated with cancer risk, outcomes, and disparities. He leads the international Men of African Descent and Carcinoma of the Prostate (MADCaP) network and has led a number of consortia studying hereditary cancer risk and prevention. He also directs the NCI-funded African cancer STARS training program that supports career development for African cancer researchers and project managers. Dr. Rebbeck has mentored over 65 trainees, most of whom hold positions in academia. He has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1994.

Dr. Bavli earned her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She then completed advanced fellowship training in hematology and oncology at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Bavli joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021.

Dr. Bavli has received numerous teaching awards and was selected for the American Society of Hematology Medical Educators Institute. She is a Course Director for both the first-year medical student course, Hematopoietic System, and the fourth-year medical student elective course, Hematology Frontiers in Medicine.

Bio: Ambarish Pandey, M.D., M.S.C.S. is an Associate Professor of Cardiology in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. He completed his medical school training at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India, followed by an internal medicine residency and a cardiology fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center. His clinical interests include the management of heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), and he is the Medical Director of the HFpEF program at UT Southwestern. As a physician-investigator, he is the principal investigator of the Cardiometabolic Research Unit at UT Southwestern, where he leads an independent research program funded by the NIH, AHA, and industry grants, focused on developing novel approaches to improve cardiometabolic health. Dr. Pandey has extensive experience with clinical trials, prospective observational studies, cardiovascular registries, and big-data approaches to risk prediction. His primary research interest is the management of HFpEF in older adults using novel pharmacologic and lifestyle strategies. He has received numerous research grants from the National Institute of Health, the American Heart Association, and other sponsors for his research focused on the prevention and management of HF. He has published over 450 peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading journals such as NEJM, JAMA, Circulation, JAMA Cardiology, and JACC, among others. He has also received numerous research awards and has served as an author on multiple white papers and position statements from international societies.

Bio: Dr. Devin Mann is the Director of the Section of Digitally Enabled Care (SoDEC) at NYU Langone Health, where he leads a cross-disciplinary team advancing digital health research, innovation, and implementation across the health system. Housed under SoDEC, the Healthcare Innovation Bridging Research, Informatics, and Design (HiBRID) Lab, founded and directed by Dr. Mann, anchors the section’s research portfolio with a focus on designing and evaluating digital tools - including remote monitoring, clinical decision support, and AI-enhanced assistants - to improve patient and provider experience. SoDEC also includes the Behavioral Design Team (Nudge Unit), which applies behavioral science and human-centered design to promote high-quality, equitable care.

Dr. Mann also directs FuturePractice, NYU Langone’s internal technology innovation lab, which brings together innovation managers, UX designers, and technologists to accelerate the development and deployment of next-generation care models. In addition, he serves as Strategic Director of Digital Health Innovation within the MCIT Department of Health Informatics, an enterprise leadership role that bridges clinical operations, digital strategy, and informatics.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center will host the annual Juneteenth 4K Freedom Walk and Festival on June 13. Attendees are invited to participate in the 4K walk and enjoy the celebratory festival afterward, which will include a resource fair, informational workshops, fun-filled activities, health screenings, and live entertainment. The event will take place at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

About Dr. McShane
Dr. McShane is the James J. Cain Professor II in Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University, where he serves as Department Head and is also affiliated with Materials Science & Engineering and the Center for Remote Health Technologies and Systems. Professor McShane's primary research interests are in biomedical instrumentation and optics, biosensor technology, and biomaterials with emphasis on micro/nanofabrication for responsive materials. In this work, he has pioneered the use of micro/nanoparticles, capsules, and hydrogel-particle composites for development of optical biosensing systems and has assisted in commercialization of related products. Professor McShane is a Fellow of IEEE, SPIE, BMES, and AIMBE. He has served in numerous elected and appointed leadership positions in IEEE, including as President of the IEEE Sensors Council, for which he has served as a chair of IEEE SENSORS Conferences and is a founding/inaugural chair for IEEE BioSensors conference in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
