About Naveen Balakrishnan:
Originally from Croydon, in the United Kingdom, Dr. Balakrishnan earned his medical degree at UT Southwestern, where he received the Dr. Richard Mays Smith Award which is presented to students who excel academically during clinical rotations and exhibit an interest in and compassion for patients. As a medical student, Dr. Balakrishnan pursued opportunites that involved community health research such as working with the homeless or those with mental health issues. Drawn to diverse patient populations as the son of Indian immigrants, and hopes to work in internal medicine and assist underserved populations.
In addition, Dr. Balakrishnan served as a Gold Humanism Honor Society co-Chair for the Humanism elective and helped create a hepatitis C screening program with linkage-to-care at the local homeless men’s shelter. He also helped grow the student advocacy group (now Student Patient Advocates for the Rights of our Communities, or SPARC) and learned about community-based participatory research, for which he graduated with a distinction in community health.
Dr. Balakrishnan is currently in his first year of nephrology fellowship training in the Department of Internal Medicine.
