Adult Esophageal Dysphagia Evaluation and Management

Grace Alip, M.S.N., APRN, ACNP-BC, is an acute care nurse practitioner at UT Southwestern Medical Center Frisco, currently working in internal medicine and liver and digestive diseases. She was board-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2011 and is licensed by the state of Texas.
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Provide an overview of the process for assessing and managing nonacute adult esophageal dysphagia.
- Review thorough patient history, symptom assessment, and physical examination to classify dysphagia features and characteristics.
- Highlight treatment strategies and the importance of an interdisciplinary in the management of dysphagia.
- Recognize the evaluation approach and diagnostic modalities.
- Discuss the causes and differential diagnoses.
- Define and distinguish between oropharyngeal and esophageal dysphagia, highlighting the key characteristics that differentiate the two.
