DAPHI Seminar Series: Empowering the Global Research Community – Insights from the REDCap Consortium
On behalf of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for Precision Health Initiative (DAPHI) – Immuno-informatics for Health Program, please see below an invitation to our August 2024 Seminar.
We are excited that our August Seminar will feature Paul Harris, PhD, a professor of biomedical informatics, biomedical engineering, and biostatistics at Vanderbilt University
Dr. Harris will present his talk “Empowering the Global Research Community"
Bio:
Dr. Harris will present a historical overview of the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) data platform and Consortium (7,300 academic, non-profit, government organizations across 156 countries).
He will describe a consortium-informed software design philosophy that gives researchers ‘an easy to do the right thing’ when designing studies so that data collection, management, quality, and integrity are preserved.
Selected REDCap features to be discussed include FHIR integration services for automated real world clinical data extraction, multi-language support for participant data capture, MyCap (a participant-facing iOS/Android mobile application designed for longitudinal studies), eConsent, a rapid-validation documentation and testing framework supporting 21CFR Part-11 validation, and an External Module framework allowing customization of the platform for very specific study needs.
Dr. Harris will conclude with a discussion centered around Vanderbilt’s REDCap Data Core, a successful sustainable recharge Core designed to support study requiring specialized support or access features.
Abstract:
Paul Harris, PhD, is professor of biomedical informatics, biomedical engineering, and biostatistics with extensive experience working in the field of clinical and translational research informatics. He serves as director of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Office of Research Informatics and is very active in the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) informatics community. Dr. Harris devised and created REDCap (www.projectredcap.org), a data collection platform that has seen widespread adoption by more than 7300 institutional partners and over 3 million end-users across 156 countries. He also created and runs a national program (www.researchmatch.org) designed to match individuals wishing to volunteer for studies and researchers recruiting patients for studies and trials. ResearchMatch is serving approximately 120,000 research volunteers and 240 research institutions. Dr. Harris and colleagues at Vanderbilt created one of the early massive open online courses (MOOCs) on the topic of “Data Management for Clinical Research” which has supported nearly 100,000 global learners. Dr. Harris is active in large-scale international collaboration efforts, leads the creation and dissemination of multiple software platforms, serves as corresponding PI for the All of Us Data and Research Core housed at VUMC, corresponding PI for the NIH/NCATS Recruitment Innovation Center, and Informatics Core Director for the Vanderbilt/MMC CTSA Hub.
