Public Health Disasters: The Invisible First Responders
Speaker: Umair A. Shah, M.D., M.B.A., Executive Director of the Harris County Public Health (HCPH) Department, Houston, Texas
Abstract: Local public health departments have a fundamental ethical responsibility for protecting their communities and over time have acquired important skills in responding to emerging threats. The Harris County Public Health (HCPH) Department--responsible for the third largest county in the nation--has faced complex weather-related and environmental disasters in recent years and must be ready and well prepared for emerging health threats that endanger the community on a daily basis. Dr. Shah will address the role and ethical commitments of public health before, during, and after disasters, how HCPH plans for disasters (internal/external), and how public health protects the community year-round.
