About Amaka Opute:

Dr. Opute holds a bachelor's in biological science with a minor in psychology from Northern Kentucky University. She earned a masters in nursing from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Ohio, followed by a master's in nursing with certification as an adult acute care nurse practitioner from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. In addition, she received a doctorate in nursing practice from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, where she examined decreasing the use of benzodiazepine and sedative hypnotics in postoperative older adults.

Before joining the UT Southwestern Medical Center faculty in 2018, Dr. Opute served as a hospitalist nurse practitioner in Dayton Ohio for five years. Dr. Opute is active in her role, educating residents, nurses, and advanced practice nursing students on the geriatrics consult service.
