“Toward a Liquid Biopsy for Lupus Nephritis”

Speaker:

Andrea Fava, M.D.
Associate Professor of Medicine
Division of Rheumatology
Director, Lupus Translational Research
Johns Hopkins University

About Andrea Fava:

Dr. Fava received his medical degree from San Raffaele Medical School in Milan, Italy, and completed internal medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He then completed fellowship training in rheumatology and in lupus at Johns Hopkins University, followed by a visiting fellowship in computational biology at the Broad Institute.

Dr. Fava's research is centered on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), particularly lupus nephritis, with the goal of advancing precision medicine through the integration of immunology, genomics, proteomics, and clinical investigation. His work has helped define the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive kidney inflammation and damage in lupus, including studies using single-cell transcriptomics, urine proteomics, and biomarker discovery to identify pathways associated with disease activity, fibrosis, and treatment response. Dr. Fava has also contributed to the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines for the management of lupus and lupus nephritis, while investigating novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets that could enable more accurate disease monitoring and individualized treatment strategies.

As a faculty member of the Hopkins Lupus Center, Dr. Fava cares for patients with SLE and lupus nephritis.
