About the Panelists:

Dr. Burstein, a Professor in the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases, most recently served as Interim Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. He currently serves as Director of the Jean Wilson Society and Director of the Inflammation & Digestive Diseases Research Center. As an accomplished physician-scientist and research leader, Dr. Burstein has extensive experience securing and overseeing research funding, mentoring investigators, and supporting the development of successful research programs.

Mr. Ismail serves as Director of Post-Award Services in the Sponsored Programs Administration. He earned both a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in healthcare organizational leadership from The University of Texas at Dallas. Since joining UT Southwestern in 2019 as a financial analyst, he has advanced through a series of leadership roles to oversee post-award administration, providing expertise in the financial management and compliance requirements that support externally funded research.

Dr. Lee is Assistant Director of Grants Administration for the Department of Internal Medicine. She earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in genetics and medical genetics, respectively, from the University of Alberta before completing postdoctoral training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and UT Southwestern. A UT Southwestern faculty member since 2015 and former Co-Director of the Touchstone Diabetes Center’s Metabolic Phenotyping Core, Dr. Lee brings firsthand experience as an investigator and grant recipient to her current role supporting researchers through the grants process.

Mr. Loewen is the Assistant Director of Finance for the Department of Internal Medicine. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Baylor University. Since joining the Department in 2023 as Manager of Financial Analysis and advancing to his current role in 2024, he has helped oversee financial planning and resource management that support the Department’s various missions.
