On Saturday, July 27, hundreds of runners and recreational walkers will participate in the third annual Joey’s Wings Charity 5K Run/Walk benefitting pediatric cancer research at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
The event is once again being sponsored by the Plano Pacers and DASH, a local Chinese running club, to help raise awareness and hope for the more than 15,000 children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. annually. On-site registration begins at 6 a.m. with the 5K officially kicking off at 8 a.m. There’s also a separate run just for kids.
All of the proceeds raised go to Joey’s Wings Foundation, a non-profit organization started by Kathy Liu in 2014 in memory of her 10-year-old son, Joey, who died from translocation renal cell carcinoma (tRCC), a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer. The $150,000 in seed money raised by Joey’s Wings over the last two years enabled the UT Southwestern Kidney Cancer Program to secure a $1.1MM grant from the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Researchers with the Kidney Cancer Program are using the funding to dissect the biology of tRCC and identify treatment therapies.
Can’t make it to the event? You can also register as a virtual runner!
