DESCRIPTION:The Donald W. Seldin Research Symposium is the annual showcase
research event of the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern M
edical Center. Highlighting the tremendous research activity of Internal M
edicine residents and fellows\, the Symposium brings together trainees\, f
aculty\, and staff to celebrate the collaborative mentored research perfor
med by Internal Medicine trainees.\n\n \n\n"Rewriting the Chapter on Cysti
 c Fibrosis"\n\n \n\nSpeaker:\n\nMichael J. Welsh\, M.D.\nProfessor of Inte
 rnal Medicine\, Molecular Phsyiology & Biophysics\nDivision of Pulmonary\,
Critical Care & Occupational Medicine\nRoy J. and Lucille A. Carver Colle
 ge of Medicine\nUniversity of Iowa\n\n \n\nAbout Michael Welsh:\n\nAn Iowa
native\, Dr. Welsh earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the Un
iversity of Iowa\, where he also completed internal medicine residency tra
ining. He then obtained advanced training through fellowship programs in r
esearch and pulmonary medicine at the University of California San Francis
co and the University of Texas at Houston. He joined the University of Iow
a faculty in 1981.\n\nDr. Welsh’s groundbreaking work revealed that cyst
ic fibrosis (CF) results from mutations in the CFTR protein\, a chloride c
hannel critical for airway hydration. His team demonstrated how these muta
tions impair chloride flow and pioneered strategies to “correct” defec
tive CFTR\, laying the foundation for therapies that now benefit about 90%
of people with CF. This research ultimately enabled the development of a
triple-drug combination that dramatically improves life expectancy\, from
the mid-30s for patients born before these therapies to potentially 80 yea
rs for babies born today.\n\nIn recognition of these achievements\, Dr. We
lsh received the 2025 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award\, oft
en called “America’s Nobel\,” alongside collaborators Jesús Gonzál
ez and Paul Negulescu. His honors also include the Steven C. Beering Award
(2017)\, the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize (2018)\, the George M. Kober
Medal (2020)\, the Shaw Prize in Life Sciences & Medicine (2022)\, the Wil
ey Prize (2023)\, the Switzer Prize (2023)\, the Canada Gairdner Internati
onal Award (2025)\, and the Yergin-New International Prize for Biomedical
Research (2025).\n\nA former Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator\
, Dr. Welsh has served as president of both the American Society for Clini
cal Investigation and the Association of American Physicians\, and he is a
member of the National Academy of Medicine\, American Academy of Arts and
Sciences\, and National Academy of Sciences.\n\nDespite decades of progre
ss\, he continues to pursue solutions for the remaining 10% of patients wi
th CF who lack effective treatments. Beyond cystic fibrosis\, his research
extends to neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheime
 r’s disease.
